We started playing together in 1998. The name “Dago Red” comes from a book by John Fante. Besides the Bacchus inspired meaning, Dago Red includes another, more emblematic one, deriving from the depreciatory way in which Americans referred to immigrants of Italian origin at the beginning of ‘900.
We perform live in Theatres, Public Houses, Festivals and on the road. Among our festival performances these deserve to be mentioned: “Acoustic guitar 5th International meeting”, edition 2002 – Sarzana (Sp); “Soave Guitar Festival 2002” – Soave (Vr); “Piccolo Festival Blues” – Valdagno (Vi); “Green Hills in Blues” in Atri (Te); “Suoni dal Castello” – Lerici (Sp); “Aventino Blues Festival”; Atessa in jazz, Atessa (Ch); “New Acoustic Music Festival” – Vasto (Ch); Murphy's Blues Festival - Silvi (Te). We performed on the road at the following Busker Festivals: “Artisti in piazza” – Pennabilli (Pu); “Scolpire in Piazza” – Sant’Ippolito (Pu) e il “Lucania Busker Festival” – Stigliano (Pz).In 2002 we held guitar demonstrations for the “Wilder” Company at the DISMA International Music Fair in Rimini. Wilder is the Italian importer of Seagull, Gretsch and larriveè guitars and of Fishmann and b-band amplification systems
The Music - The Instruments. In an attempt to define our music, we could call it “Blues’n Roots”. Our aim is to research and explore (the) Blues and all related musical cultures. We are an acoustic band and the instruments we play: Guitar, Double Bass, Harmonica, Dobro, Voice and Percussions are those most directly associated with the “street” tradition, intended as the main stage for popular music.
Our Repertory Live During our concert we play Blues and Folk classics, Work Songs and Ballads but we also propose some of our own compositions. Our playing style doesn’t consist of faithfully reproduced originals. We rearrange tracks by filtering them with our own experience and sensibility. We believe this is the only way the Blues will maintain its vitality throughout centuries to come. Our reference artists are both classics, amongst which: Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Rev. Blind Lemon Jefferson, Woody Gutrhie, Rev. Blind Gary Davis, Menphis Minnie, Sonny Terry & Brownie Mc. Ghee, Mississippi John Hurt and contemporary such as J.J. Cale, Tom Waits, Ry Cooder etc. etc.BLUES TRAITSThis project was developed with comic strip master Beppe Barbati (Edizioni Bonelli) and “Scuola del Fumetto” of Pescara: it is a stage performance where Beppe draws extemporary representations of the tracks we play. His drawings are collected to make up an exhibition at the end of the concert.
Discography
“Folk'n Blues memories and other tales” (Self production – 2001).This is our first, officially published, work. The title is meant to recall the art of storytelling. Everyday life told in music, through our tales and the tales handed on to us from the elders of the Blues, such as we experience them: this is our music! To us, acoustic instrument playing and live recording, without added tracks or artifices, is the only way of rendering the simplicity and sincerity of what we wish to narrate. The sleeve design is by comic strip master Beppe Barbati, who definitely doesn’t need presentations. We left Beppe total freedom of expression, and it couldn’t have been otherwise, because total freedom of intent is the whole project’s underlying philosophy. BBC North, Radio 1 RAI, KJLU (Jefferson City Mo - USA), Radio Holstebro (Denmark), Radio Città del Capo, Radio Torino Popolare, Radio Milano Popolare, Radio Città Pescara and other radios broadcasted tracks from this CD.
“Pennabilli 2002”(Produced by the “Ultimo Punto” Cultural Association - 2002) This collection of tracks performed by buskers who participated in the Festival’s 2002 edition includes one of our songs. “Elettroacustico” (Produced by Willy Davoli - 2002) This is an acoustic music collection by Italian artists. The CD will be released in spring this year. Besides our music the CD also features tracks by: Flaco Biondini, Rudy Rotta, Paolo Giordano, Bermuda Acoustic Trio. Amongst our earlier unpublished works there is a studio recorded CD , dated 1999 and titled “Gimmy Fruit, natural born” (intentionally beginning with G) and an August 2000 “live” recording in from a Folk Blues evening organised by the “Blues 767” Cultural Association of Palena (CH).
